McDonalds Paragliding Challenge - Results

McDonalds Paragliding Challenge

We had a great flying weekend with Saturday being mixed conditions from light scratchy and then gusty and strong wind followed by light conditions. The dedication of the new pilots was amazing as they gave it everything they had to complete the tasks and all the pilots commented on how much they learnt from this experience. We opened the window at 11 h00 and had the pilots flying until 17h00 to try and squeeze the last few points out of the day. Some of the highlights was a student, Dave Mclenegan, who flew very well with only 23 flights and managed 3 turn points another performer was Mark Sofianos who with only 160 flights won the big boys league for over 200 flights. Overall I was impressed with the skills and dedication of those who took part. There were a few locals who did not take part and we hope they can join us next time having fun while increasing their experience.

I encourage all local to actively support your club and be part of the flying community we need your support and you will bring value to the sport and your flying experience.

We flew on Sunday for league points and conditions became quite good with some nice flights and good height gain those that stayed later in the afternoon found doing the tasks was  quite easy. We had two pilots not taking part fly with their mean machines almost to Kynsna, well done Jay Van Deventer and Khoubi Bowden.

Please all pilots send us your Sunday results so we can log them for the league.

Cheers and once again thanks for Mc Donalds and Mark and Taryn Groenewald for making this possible.

Competitions .

The competition of the 26th November was a great success as we had lots of pilots come and take part in the fun event. The weather played its part with a good southerly most of the time going south east and the inversion at 200m did not prevent too many from reaching their goals. Well done Urs and Werner.

The Weekend of the 26th and 27th November 2011 will see Skywings hosting the Wilderness Club Challenge. Skywings has never been beaten at home as a club and we mean to maintain this record.

This competition is all about fun and pushing your personal boundaries. It's a big learning curve as now you must plan your route fly smart instead of being just a goldfish in it's bowl you are now in the big sea and have to use those hidden talents.

The main Objective is to fly around a number of turnpoints and score points for each turnpoint and then fly open distance and score points for each km. There are different classess and they are the following: pilots with less than 100 flights Novice pilots then the intermediate class is between 100-300 flights and lastly the Open class with more than 300 flights.

There is also a ladies section and we have for the first time quite a few ladies in the house!  The competition is open to all clubs and pilots without a club membership. We noramlly start the competition on the Saturday with Sunday as spare day. If both days are good we have an Open distance task on Sunday. The prize giving is held on the Saturday night and there is a social and party. It's normally quite festive and there are sponsored prizes to be won by everyone.

We will also have a Competition in March. Date to be announced.

Competitions The League.

This is a seperate competition for pilots of the Garden Route and is designed to give pilots something to do and achieve instead of just boring soaring all day.

There are two divisions, one being the Coastal League which is for those that love ridge soaring but now you have goals! The main objective is to fly distance on the coast. The longest flight on the coast, just soaring is 32km to Goukamma river near Buffalo Bay, it's an amazing flight from Beach Hotel. There are other epic flights to be done; the flight from Beach Hotel to Gerrickes and back. You need to rack 5 of your best flights and the person with the most km is the winner! Prizes, medals and trophies will be presented to pilots at end year function in November 2012. Flights can only be done at club sites in the Garden Route.

The XC league is more for the the guys that like thermal challenge. We have many sites in the Garden Route that are suitable for nice XC flights and Serpentine and Sedgefield are up there for a quick 20km flight. We also have Goosevalley and Tolberg for longer flights. So take your thermal flying to a new level and fly away from your nest and score some satisfaction. There will be medals and trophies and an XC guru award for the longest distance done in the year. Top 5 flights will be added up and you may rise to champion of the League.

There will also be the ultimate Top Gun pilot who masters both league and rises to glory on wings of super duper magic stuff. Who will be named Top Gun? The latest updates will revealed each month.

There are some young guns that have been firing from hip lately and they were doing some nice distance at Gatskop so you oldtimers, old dogs, and greybeards beware...

The game is on!
